Facebook’s Android app update is a malware gateway

Facebook
One of the great and terrible things about Android is the level of control that is available to the user. Your smartphone is as secure as you are, and as long as you don’t go poking around in thing you don’t understand you’ll be fine. Facebook’s most recent update upsets this general rule, and the end result could be disastrous.
The easiest way to keep your Android smartphone safe is to use it with the out-of-the-box settings — there are plenty of ways you can leave yourself vulnerable to attacks on Android if you do anything else. Rooting your phone can expose you to software attacks, but that usually requires a fair bit of know how. The Android software utilities include the ability to install apps from unknown sources. This feature is great for installing apps that are being beta tested, or apps that aren’t available in the Google Play Store. Facebook has decided to take advantage of this ability through an update to their app.
Facebook
Facebook’s Android app is pushing an update that bears an oddly technical message. The app explains that you will be able to download new updates as they are available right through the app. The language is a little funny, prompting you to install the latest build, and Facebook has such confidence in their app’s ability to deliver the download that there’s a retry button just in case. This update happens over WiFi, which Facebook touts is a feature for some reason. There are two big issues with this method of updating that have nasty implications for Android users.
The first issue is a fight between Google and Facebook, which may cause the app to be removed from the Play Store at some point. Google has a check system that verifies apps that are installed through their service are only accessing the parts of your phone that you have given permission to access. This goes back to Facebook’s behavior in the past, where they have grabbed contact data from Android phones but refused to share their data back with Android.
The second issue, and perhaps the most significant, is how the app updates are installed. Users will need to have the ability to install software from unverified sources.
Facebook
In order to safely use this feature, users would need to allow the phone to install from unknown sources manually and then disable the feature after the app was updated. Otherwise, any app could be installed without permission and without the user knowing.
The single greatest infection point for most phones is this feature, which is why it is hidden in the Android menu system and is always off by default on every phone that has been sold. To put users in a situation that requires that option to be enabled for something as commonplace as Facebook is incredibly dangerous.

How Wallet ruined the Google I/O 2013 registration

I/O 2013

As Android’s market share grows and software like Chrome OS become more popular, so does the desire to attend Google’s main event. This means every year the registration process for Google’s I/O developer conference gets more difficult and the competition to get a ticket ramps up. This year Google seemed to have everything under control, but it looks like many users feel the search giant tripped at the finish line.
The I/O registration process was entirely Google-centric this year. You needed a Google+ account, with your payment information pre-loaded into Google Wallet. After that everyone was told that if you followed the instructions you’d have a fair shot getting in.
The instructions were simple, though mildly akin to being told not to look down when standing somewhere very high. If you parked yourself at the I/O registration page a few minutes before 10AM ET, you’d be put in line to get a ticket. Registrants were warned: Don’t refresh, don’t mess with the site, and don’t have multiple tabs open if you want things to go smoothly and to ensure your place in line. Google gave people plenty of warning and explained everything clearly, but smooth is about the furthest thing from how most would describe today’s registration.
If you were waiting well in advance, the website shifted at 9:30 to a countdown for the registration to be open. As the count drew closer to zero, the color changed to a bright red, just in case you weren’t starting at the ticking clock. When the virtual doors opened, a loading ring GIF sat and informed you that Google was searching for a ticket to give you.
If this didn’t timeout and offer you an Error 500 page, you were to confirm your information and head to checkout. Google placed a five minute timer on registration, and at the end of that period your ticket was put back in the general access pile. Five minutes would be more than enough time to checkout under normal circumstances. Unfortunately, Google’s own checkout service hung for many, leaving them unable to complete the transaction in time.
IO 2013 registration
Google Wallet offered users a different loading ring, this time in an attempt to pull the records for their payment information. Given Google’s stern warnings regarding refreshing or tampering with the site, users were left with little option but to sit and watch as the clock counted down on the registration. When it did inevitably time out, they had to start the process over and hope that they would not suffer the same fate as before. After 45 minutes of the process, social networks finally began to populate with users who had gotten tickets to the conference. Minutes later, the website announced that tickets were sold out.
Every year it seems Google’s services fail in one key place during the registration process. The problems seem to always come back to the same issue, that these services are unable to scale under load. Last year the registration page suffered from a denial of service style flood of refreshing users attempting to get a ticket. This year users were discouraged from that behavior, but Google was still unable to deliver an acceptable experience.

Samsung Galaxy S4 vs Galaxy S3: More than a number bump

SGS3 vs SGS4
Samsung’s Galaxy S4 — the company’s flagship smartphone for the 2013 — has been announcedand unsurprisingly the handset bears a striking resemblance to its predecessor. If you take a closer look, however, you’ll find there’s more than a couple of differences between the Samsung Galaxy S3 $189.99 at Amazon Wireless and the new Galaxy S4.
For the purposes of this compare, we’re going to be focusing on the US variants of both Galaxy smartphones. We’ll be looking at the Verizon Wireless variant of the Galaxy S3 as well as the S4.

“This year we put a four on the box”

For most phones out there, a year’s worth of technology evolution shows itself in some not-so-subtle ways. If you look at Motorola, HTC, or LG, it’s usually not hard to point at the phones in a lineup and tell which phone is the older generation. Design evolution is just as important to most companies as hardware iteration, but you’ll find no such glaringly obvious distinctions between the Galaxy S4 and the Galaxy S3. Samsung’s design has survived a full generation, much in the same way that Apple maintains their design for “s” variants of their hardware line. Unlike Apple, there’s a lot more than a spec boost between these two phones — but more on that later.
The Galaxy S4′s physical updates are nearly imperceptible when seeing the two phones laying side by side. Samsung’s latest flagship is ever so slightly heavier and just barely taller and wider, but also manages to be a full millimeter thinner. The jump from the 720p 4.8-inch screen to the 1080p 4.99-inch screen marks a significant increase in quality as well as a slight increase in overall size. Despite having a larger battery and a bigger screen, the Galaxy S4 is still lighter than its predecessor.
There may not be much difference looking at these two phones with the screen off, but turn them on and the power under the hood is sure to show you which is the Galaxy S4.
sgs3 vs sgs4

Not all Samsung under the hood

The Samsung Galaxy S3 was a significant milestone for the company, due mostly to the ability to put the same phone with the same branding on the shelves of nearly every carrier on the planet. In order to accomplish that last year, Samsung’s Galaxy S3 was never really one hardware platform. Half of the phones ran on Samsung’s own Exynos processor, while the US LTE variants ran on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processor. As a result, the Galaxy S3 existed as both a quad core phone with 1GB of RAM and a dual core phone with 2GB of RAM. The experience was as similar as Samsung could make it at the time, but at the end of the day there were two very different phones with the same name.
The Samsung Galaxy S4 US LTE variant is also running a Qualcomm processor, though bumped to quad-core 1.9GHz with 2GB of RAM. Their international version will once again feature a Samsung made processor, though this Exynos will have an octo-core setup. The phone will be sold in 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB variants with the ability to expand any of these by another 64GB. The 2600 mAh battery is expected to comfortably drive the phone all day, but like the GS3 the battery is removable and exchangeable.
Where Samsung may have been forced to rely on Qualcomm for their processors, the display itself remains Samsung made. There was a lot of discussion surrounding the 1080p display on the Galaxy S4, and whether or not it was possible for it to be made using Samsung’s Super AMOLED technology. Not only will the GS4 follow in its predecessors footsteps by offering the first of the new top of the line display tech, but it will also include software that adjusts the contrast and brightness on the phone contextually as well as environmentally.
sgs3 vs sgs4
Clearly a busy year for Samsung
The explosive popularity of the Galaxy S3 meant Samsung’s only option was to shoot through the ceiling with the Galaxy S4. As with the Galaxy S3, hardware alone is not going to sell this phone. Samsung’s custom variant of Android has always been a little different than the rest of the kids in class, but recently TouchWiz has grown to offer a wealth of features for everyone. The unification of software tools across the Galaxy Note and Galaxy S3 was a great decision for Samsung, allowing their phones to offer a level of multitasking not available on any other smartphone right now. Coupled with their dedication to NFC-reliant activities and their Smart Share features, Samsung quickly gone to the head of the pack in competing with the other Android variants.
The Galaxy S4 offers a whole new bundle of features, continuing the integration of Galaxy Note tools and adding in all new features alongside Android 4.2.2. The new flagship includes an IR sensor on the front to help in tracking face and hand movements. Combined with new software, the Galaxy S4 can pause video just be recognizing that your face has turned away, flick through albums and websites by detecting the wave of your hand, and the IR sensor can even be used to scan barcodes without taking a photo of them like traditional smartphones. You’ll also be able to control your television and any other IR capable piece of hardware.
Samsung has also made impressive strides in their camera technology, specifically with the ability to use the front and rear camera simultaneously. These “Dual Camera” modes make it possible to edit yourself into a photo as the user, participate in video recordings of your family, or have a video chat with both cameras running in unison. These tools are provided by Samsung, but come at the price of OS level lock in. Many of these features are only usable with other Samsung Galaxy S4 owners, which is a trend the company has been moving towards for years.

Final thoughts

You can clearly see, despite looking terribly similar at first glance, there’s a world of difference between these two Galaxies. Samsung has done an impressive job releasing a thoroughly worthy update to their hardware line, and it will be interesting to see how the phone competes with the rest of the market as the year progresses.

Replace Google Reader with a Raspberry Pi

Tiny tiny RSS running on Raspberry Pi
With Google Reader shutting down this July, you might be looking for another way to stay on top of your feed subscriptions. Why not set up a Raspberry Pi to do the not-so-heavy lifting instead of importing your feeds into yet another web-based service? After all, you never know when anyone (or everyone) is going to pull the pin on their aggregators — especially since RSS is supposed to be dead already anyway.
Just follow Conor O’Neill’s lead and install Tiny Tiny RSS on your Raspberry Pi. It’s an open-source app that has been around for ages, and its developers provide a tarball that makes setup on the Pi (or any Linux-powered system) a simple task. You’ll need a basic LAMP stack running, too, because Tiny Tiny RSS isn’t a desktop app, it’s a web app that you can self-host.
That makes it a pretty ideal Google Reader replacement if you’ve got a decent internet connection and are comfortable setting up port forwarding on your router. Once everything’s configured, you’ll be able to access your feeds anywhere you have a browser available — just like you can with Reader. And since you’re in control, you don’t have to worry about a startup going under or someone going on a spring cleaning purgefest. As long as your ISP bill is up-to-date, you’ll always be able to read your feeds in the comfort of Tiny Tiny RSS.
Don’t have a Raspberry Pi? Loads of other devices will do the trick. SheevaPlug devices should work nicely, too, and so will those nifty little HDMI stick PCs — as long as you own one that can handle an ARM-friendly Linux distro.
One thing to be aware of is that your comparatively limited processing and bandwidth mean that Tiny Tiny has to work a little harder to retrieve all that feed content. It may struggle at times to keep up with hundreds of feeds, unlike Google Reader with its powerful cloud back-end.

Pebble smartwatch teardown reveals minimal innards that are nearly impossible to fix

Pebble teardown
Perhaps lost in the speculation regarding an Apple smartwatch, the smartwatch that first lit the internet on fire, the Pebble, has shipped to eager customers. The maniacal folks over at iFixit sought to satiate their tech bloodlust, and ripped the Pebble to shreds, exposing its insides for all the world to see. However, it turns out that there isn’t much going on under the hood.
For those of you that somehow missed the Pebble as it took over the tech news cycle, it’s a watch, funded through Kickstarter, that interacts with your smartphone and displays your phone’s information on the watch. Considering you can just look at your smartphone to see what’s happening on there, the Pebble’s true goal is to use it when it would be inconvenient to pull your phone from your pocket or bag. When at the gym, for example, it’s annoying to have to reach for your phone when you want to change tracks on a song, or check Twitter in between sets. With the Pebble, you could leave your phone in your pocket, but still have access to core features. You’d think that would make the watch a complicated device, but when iFixit busted it open, they didn’t find much going on.
The Pebble doesn’t have any visible outer screws, so they had to use the iOpener kit, which was originally used to pry open the iPad. Due to a significant amount of adhesive, the watch’s casing was difficult to open, and iFixit reports that it’s impossible to open the casing without breaking the screen.
Broken Pebble screen
Once the watch was opened, the team found that three backlight LEDs is all that is needed to light the Pebble’s display. Rather than making a mess though and having to dive hands-deep into the watch’s guttyworks, the team found a simple assembly kept all neat and tidy inside a small plastic frame.
A cable is home to the Pebble’s three LEDs, Bluetooth antenna, and the unit’s four buttons, so if one of those should malfunction, you can’t really get in there and replace the component without replacing the cable. However, as we saw above, you can’t really get into the Pebble without busting the screen anyway. This also means you can’t replace the battery without breaking the unit.
That’s about all there is to the Pebble’s innards. It’s a tidy, compact design, and you can’t really open it unless you’re comfortable with a broken screen. To the average consumer, this wouldn’t be a problem until — most likely — the battery goes on the fritz. So, if you have or are planning on getting a Pebble, and are also fond of fixing your devices yourself, you should probably just keep good care of your watch instead.

Apple’s Lightning AV adapter contains a tiny ARM computer

Lightning AV adaptor
There’s been a lot of speculation about why Apple decided to start using the Lightning port in every part of their current generation of hardware. A teardown of Apple’s Lightning AV adapter reveals some insight into why, and how Apple and their users will benefit from it as the platform moves forward.
Apple’s got a sordid past when it comes to how they have handled what cables you can and can’t use with their hardware. Previous generations of iDevices have had pages of apps that allowed jailbroken iDevices to use whatever cable they chose to transmit video to second screens after Apple locked things down in software. With third party cables sometimes being significantly less expensive than the ones being sold officially, Apple could either do something about it or look to a solution that addressed the problem from a mutually beneficial perspective. Lightning was Apple’s solution to both the third party cable market and an elegant solution to how video output is handled on iOS.
Apple Lightning AV
Recently the guys at Panic discovered that the Apple Lightning AV adapter was less than honest about what it was capable of. When trying to output a video to a 1080p television over HDMI, it was discovered that the output was actually a scaled 1600×900 video feed that lead to odd visual artifacting and an overall decrease in quality. Since Apple’s website pretty clearly states that Lightning iDevices with the AV adapter can output at 1080p, this is pretty bad form on Apple’s part. One of the guys performing the tests noticed that the feed looked very similar to that of an AirPlay feed, and decided to cut open the AV adapter to satisfy the urge to know what they thought initially was an AirPlay receiver of some kind.
Underneath the Lightning AV adapter’s soft white plastic casing was a nondescript ARM processor and 2GB of RAM. Basically, the AV adapter has a small computer onboard, designed to handle the raw feed from the Lightning port and translate it into something the HDMI cable can use. This means that the actual iDevice doesn’t have to be responsible for this processing, which is great for the overall performance of the hardware.
A comment left on the original Panic post, who hinted very heavily that he or she might work for Apple, explained that this method of handling the video means an adapter for any video format could be made. While this certainly lends to the idea that Lightning is “future-proof,” it’s important to remember the first part of this, where an adapter will only exist if Apple approves it moving forward.
The bad news is that Apple is unlikely to be able to fix the problems with this Lightning adapter with software. You’ll probably need the next version of the hardware, and it’s unclear whether or not Apple will ever publicly address the fact that the current hardware is essentially false advertising. The good news is that Apple can fix it, and its more than likely they already are.

An iPhone 5S motherboard image leaks complete with quad-core A7 processor

iPhone 5S motherboard leaked shot
It is widely expected that Apple will refresh its iPhone line-up later this year with the introduction of the iPhone 5S. We aren’t expecting much of a change between the iPhone 5 and 5S in terms of how it looks. That’s based on the fact Apple doesn’t seem to be investing much at the moment in new production equipment, meaning not much in the way of new hardware features. With that being the case, Apple will be focused on upgrading the components inside the handset.
The image you see above is thought to be a leaked shot of the motherboard that will ship inside the iPhone 5S. As usual, this has come from an unknown source that website iOSDoc trusts along with a few details of what we can expect with the refresh in terms of software updates.
Apparently, that A7 processor you see in the image is a quad-core chip that will be clocked at 1.2GHz. Although the A6 inside the iPhone 5 runs slightly faster at 1.3GHz, it’s only a dual-core chip so the A7 should offer noticeable performance gains and allow the smartphone to just do more. The GPU is expected to be switched out for the quad-core PowerVR SGX554MP4, which is used in the 4th-gen iPad. There’s also expected to be 2GB of dual-channel LPDDR2-1066 RAM on board instead of the 1GB the iPhone 5 currently uses. Again, that should allow more headroom for the software and apps you want to run on the phone.
With new hardware also comes some software updates and usually a few surprises from Apple. The introduction of the iPhone 5S is expected to include iOS 7 rolled out alongside an updated version of Siri.
All that new hardware means there’s bound to be significantly more draw on the battery. Apple will have to counter that either with a more aggressive battery management system, or by managing to squeeze a larger battery inside the case.

Chumby creator working on an open source, ARM-powered laptop

Open Source laptop
Bunnie Huang, the brains behind the Chumby internet appliance, is working on another cool creation: a DIY open source laptop. While it looks like many other dev boards on the market (like theRaspberry Pi or Odroid), Huang’s goal is to create an ARM-powered laptop with “some wacky features in it for hackers.” The wacky features lists includes things like a Raspberry-Pi compatible expansion header, and both analog and digital inputs and outputs.
Huang is currently working with a quad-core Freescale iMX6 processor clocked at 1.2GHz. The board looks like a tinker’s dream, with standard So-DIMM, SATA-II, and mini-PCIe connectors, micro SD and SD card slots, two USB ports, and a single USB on-the-go port. HDMI and LVDS outputs are available for pushing video to displays, and both 10/100 and gigabit Ethernet ports are supplied. The dual network ports might also fall under the wacky features heading as well, since they’d allow a laptop (or desktop or tablet) built using Huang’s board to serve as a firewall device.
The design started taking shape early this summer, and Huang says he’s already got an ARM-friendly Linux distribution booting. Anyone who’s interested can download datasheets and programming manuals for all the key components. It’s enough information to allow those with the skills to create their own bootable firmware from scratch, says Huang.
While this started out as a labor of love, Huang notes in his blog post that others might be interested in purchasing a board like the one he’s created. If there’s enough interest, he may even launch a Kickstarter campaign to facilitate the production of a small run of the open hardware. Don’t expect them to come as cheaply as the Raspberry Pi or Odroid, however. Huang’s after a “low-volume, hand-crafted laptop made with uniquely open-source components,” and would price the kit accordingly.

Rahasia Kekuatan Gorilla Glass

Rahasia Kekuatan Gorilla Glass

Gadget saat ini berkembang dengan pesat. Prosesor berkembang seturut Hukum Moore.

Gambar Rahasia Kekuatan Gorilla Glass Smartphone rahasia LCD kekuatan kaca Gorilla Glass Corning gorilla glass 22
